GWF Water Filter - Should You Get It Or Not?

As with most brand-specific water filters for refrigerators, the GWF water filter may work with a wide range of General Electric (GE) and Hotpoint fridges but only with these particular brands.  Thus, if you have other brands of refrigerators, you should look elsewhere for the water filter because a perfect fit it will definitely not be.

With that being said, you will find little fault with any of the GWF water filters.  It is widely available in many stores and sites, which is to be expected considering that the GE Company is one of the most well-recognized electronic consumer manufacturers in the country and in the world.

Depending on the model of the water itself, it may fit into one specific refrigerator model or it can be adapted to fit many refrigerator models.  For example, original filters with the codes FXRC, FXRT and WR97X10006 require adapters to be used with the GWF water filter.  To be sure, it is wise to consult the manual and use the search tool in the sites where you will be buying the water filter.

When you already have the right filter, it is a simple matter of removing the old one and then replacing it with the new one.  Again, consult the manual for specific steps but any one with half a brain and two hands can handle the job.

It should be noted that the water must be allowed to run for at least 10 glasses before drinking from the dispenser.  You will notice turbidity during the first few uses, which will go away on its own.  Basically, the new water filter is adjusting to the unit, thus, the need to avoid using the dispensed water first.

You must also take note of the time when the GWF water filter is necessary.  There are three ways to determine the appropriate time period for replacement - change the filter every 6 months or every 400 gallons or when the indicator light turns red.  It will depend on the type of water used (municipal water requires less changing that well water), the frequency of use (the more people in the household, the shorter the time between filter changes) and the type of filter used.

Said filter changes are necessary lest the contaminants, pollutants and parasites present in even the cleanest municipal treated water slip through the overused activated carbon filter.  You will see the difference between the old filter and the new filter from the water alone - it tastes, looks and feels better with the filter replacement.

But it is not only appearances that matter in the replacement of the GWF water filter.  You will appreciate the peace of mind from knowing that heavy metals, parasites, herbicides and insecticides, to name a few contaminants, have been filtered out of the water.  For example, the water filter removes 99% of lead, 98% of chlorine, 99% of cysts, 99% of turbidity and as much as 94% of pesticides and insecticides, which makes its way to municipal tap water from the sources like lakes, rivers and lagoons even after the purification processes.

So, whenever there is a need for cleaner water, go for the GWF water filter for your GE refrigerators.  You will save money on medical costs borne of diseases from unfiltered water, on environmental costs for buying bottled water and on financial costs for maintenance expenses on the kitchen appliance.
